Krakow

Krakow banner

Krakow is considered by many to be the cultural capital of Poland. It was named the European Capital of Culture for the year 2000 by the European Union. Krakow has 28 museums and public art galleries. Among them are the main branch of Poland's National Museum and the Czartoryski Museum, the latter featuring works by Leonardo and Rembrandt.

Krakow has many original buildings dating from different epochs; the whole of the old town was included on UNESCO's first list of the world's cultural heritage in 1978. All that remains of the medieval fortifications is the Barbakan in the Old town. It is an interesting example of military architecture and one of the finest of its kind still intact in Europe.

Famous for their vodkas and superb beers, Poles are not shy when it comes to the odd drink or two. As a visitor to the city, the choice is mind-boggling.

If you are wondering about the local food, you don't worry. Forget all the old jokes about Polish potatoes and boiled cabbage - Poles have been described as the Latins of the east, and know not only how to party, but also how to eat in style.
